It is amazing to work as a volunteer at this wonderful Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Which has given home for over 80 (including baby elephants who have been born here) orphaned, injured or rescued wild elephants.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage and breeding sanctuary for rescued, injured or abused wild elephants which is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation on a 25-acre (10 ha) coconut plantation on the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned elephants found in the jungle. As of 2019, there are 86 elephants and there are 48 mahouts who take care of the elephants. The orphanage is very popular among local and foreign tourists. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the broad river bank as the herd interacts socially, bathing and playing.

Reasons to Volunteer Abroad:

See the world with a purpose

Some travelers are content partying their way around the world. You, however, are looking for a more substantial experience. Volunteering not only gives you the opportunity to give back, it gives you something to do, somewhere to go, and somewhere to stay. You'll still have plenty of time for exploring local ruins or having a lager down at the pub. But one word of warning, don't set out to change the world — you'll be disappointed to learn that the world doesn't necessarily need changing. The best goal is to challenge yourself everyday, test your patience, and open your mind and heart.

Build your Resume
Many employers value volunteerism above all else. If you have volunteerism on your resume it shows that you are flexible, patient and committed.

An unforgettable experience!
